Jameson Irish Whiskey 2017 St Patricks Day Edition features local artist Steve McCarthy, who took inspiration from the saying “Dublin rewards those who ‘chance their arm.'” McCarthy put his twist on the expression that still lives on today with his design for the 2017 Limited Edition Jameson Whiskey Bottle. Every St. Patrick’s Day, Jameson honors their Irish heritage by collaborating with some of the top artists found in Ireland. Each year, the design and designer’s name appear on the labeling. This year, Steve designed a lovely label by merging historical and contemporary Dublin with his own unique style. His work is usually inspired by the playful use of works that Irish are infamous for. “Chancing your arm” can be interpreted as ‘taking a shot in the dark’ or stepping out of your comfort zone. Hints of sweetness and almonds from the sherry cask whiskey complement the vanilla, toasted wood and pepper flavors imparted by the Wild Turkey bourbon barrels. St Paddys Day Jameson
Ireland pretty much has two national beverages — Irish whiskey and stout (and no, I’m not counting poitin). Why not combine the two, you say? Say hello to Jameson Caskmates Stout Edition. (Perhaps implying that other editions are in the works.)
It’s a simple idea at work here: Take Jameson Original whiskey and finish it in casks of Franciscan Well, an Irish microbrew stout. (No, it’s not Guinness, but that really isn’t barrel aged any more, anyway.) Actually, the barrels start at Jameson, then they go to the brewery, then they go back to Jameson for reuse as finishing barrels. There’s no word on how long the whiskey spends in the barrels in this final step.
The results are interesting if nothing else. Slightly darker in color, Caskmates immediately showcases a sharper nose with notes of oatmeal, nuts, and cocoa powder, a contrast to malty, fruity notes on the Original bottling. On the palate Caskmates is a more intense whiskey with flecks of coffee, chocolate malt balls, and apple cider. Standard Jameson: simple and sweet, with a mix of fruit and nuts and a backing of gentle grains. I don’t get a distinctly stout character in Caskmates — maybe a touch of hops on the finish — but on its own merits it’s a whiskey worth picking up, particularly if you’re an Irish fan.
The world?s best selling Irish whiskey, originally distilled in Dublin, where John Jameson, a Scottish Presbyterian, founded a distillery in 1780. Jameson?s is now one of many whiskeys produced in Irish Distiller?s highly versatile Midleton distillery in County Cork. The Jameson range of whiskeys comprise a comparatively high percentage of pot still spirit, which gives them greater character and complexity then some other Irish whiskeys. The nose offers an interesting combination of floral, orange, toffee, Sherry and spice notes. Water releases more cooked fruits and a suggestion of linseed. Initially citric in the mouth, along with classic Irish oiliness, more profound notes of Sherry develop, along with fudge, vanilla and spice. The finish is long, warming and spicy, remaining oily to the very end. Jameson is deservedly a world leader. Irish whiskey at its finest.

Jameson Black Barrel is mostly pot still malted and unmalted barley aged for considerably longer than standard Jameson — 12 years vs. 5 to 7, in both Bourbon and sherry casks. Then a touch of grain whiskey that’s been aged in Wild Turkey barrels is added to the mix. Bottling alcohol level remains at 80 proof.
While there’s nothing specifically “black” about Black Barrel, it’s a considerably different experience than standard label Jameson. The nose is rich, Bourbon-like, with vanilla and toasty oak notes. The body is creamy and impressively smooth, undercut with some citrus character likely brought on by the sherry cask influence. The finish offers grain notes, like a bowl of thick, raisined oatmeal, with a fleeting touch of smoke at the end. It’s night and day with regular Jameson, which is all fresh fruit and grass, with a menthol character to it. Black Barrel, side by side, very quickly overwhelms the regular bottling. As Irish whiskey goes, it’s almost decadent.

Dewar’s 15 is comprised of 40 very rare vintage single grain and single malt scotches, which are aged in ex-bourbon or ex-sherry casks, then blended in oaks casks. The bouquet is rich with fresh shaved coconut and a hint of honey. The palate is creamy with notes of custard, vanilla flan and toffee, finishing short and dry. Enjoy neat, on the rocks, or in your favorite scotch-based cocktail. Try the Blood and Sand cocktail: Shake 3/4 oz. of each in a shaker with ice: Dewar’s, fresh squeezed orange juice, sweet vermouth and Cherry Heering. Strain into a cocktail glass with an orange peel.

This Scotch is limited edition with a special backstory. The Dewar’s master blender, Stephanie Macleod, used the 1851 Sir Edwin Landseer painting of a stag in the Scottish Highlands, “The Monarch of the Glen” as inspiration for Dewar’s 15 scotch. The scotch is also known as “The Monarch”, and has the name printed on the label.

Tasting Notes: The nose has a wintery spiciness to it with hints of floral and citrus and some white pepper. The palate is full with a variety of flavors: creamy toffee and glazed pecan provide a sweetness with complementary charred oak wood and peat smoke. It finishes with slightly sweet mixed fruit peels. Add a drop of water to open up more sweet notes of shortbread and vanilla.
It all began in 1819 when Johnnie Walker used his inheritance from his father’s passing to purchase a grocer’s shop in Kilmarnock. Here he started blending his grocer’s stock of single malts because he wanted to introduce (and enjoy) a consistent flavor profile. Naturally, Johnnie had a talent for blending, and his blends became a hit with his customers. Johnnie knew to “Keep Walking” despite the loss of his father and the world is grateful for it. Johnnie’s son and grandsons continued to grow the brand and whiskies to introduce the labels that we know and love today.
