Bacardi Solera 1873 Rum
Bacardi Solera 1873 Rum and its attractive nut brown color received 85 points for the Ultimate Beverage Challenge. A full and animated aroma hints at molasses, brown rise, soy, honey, and brown sugar while the palate receives mostly molasses and honey elements. Notes of mint, grass, and herbs can be found as well. The rum is aged in newly charred (and carefully selected) oak casks. The after palate is dry with a pleasingly toasty taste.
A small family decided to purchase a distillery in the beautiful city of Santiago de Cuba on February 4, 1862. Smooth, light-bodied spirits were produced in the moderate tin-roof distillery with bats in the rafters and what is now known as Bacardi was born. Bacardi has been owned and operated by family members ever since Don Facundo Bacardí Massó founded the company – seven generations ago! They are currently present in more than 160 markets worldwide. This includes the United States, Mexico, Italy, China, Brazil, and many, many more.
But like majority of the larger companies, Bacardi has more than just their own brand in their portfolio. On top of being the world’s best-selling & most-awarded rum, their portfolio also includes the world’s leading super premium vodka Grey Goose; the world’s most awarded blended scotch Dewar’s; and the fastest growing gin in the world: Bombay Sapphire. It also contains nonalcoholic products like the world’s leading vermouth from Martini. They, of course, do carry other leading and up-and-coming brands which are also sold globally.
In many countries and cultures, bats are considered a symbol of good fortune. Among local Cuban populations and the Bacardís’ native Catalonia bats also represent faithfulness, discretion, and brotherhood. When Doña Amalia Bacardi saw fruit bats in the family’s distillery, she knew it was a sign! The bat soon became the rum’s symbol and is still used today. It was a logical choice for a logo since bats are natural friends to the sugar cane industry. They pollinate the crops and prey on the insects that can cause damage to it. Although the logo has been changed graphically throughout the years, the Bacardi family still looks at it as a sign of persistence and determination.
